Tom studied architecture at the University of Melbourne and University of Technology Sydney, graduating in 1989. He subsequently worked for several respected Sydney architectural practices before taking the opportunity to work with a French guild trained carpenter for several years. This experience taught him the value of precision, a deep respect for traditional processes and that good design is a balance of aesthetics and technology. Following this Tom became a licensed builder and spent the next decade exploring and working with conventional and less conventional building systems such as mud brick and rammed earth.
His practice since 2003 has been predominantly as an architect though he constantly refers to his building experience. Based in Sydney Tom’s work ranges across residential, small-scale apartment and commercial projects, heritage reporting and land re-zoning applications in urban, rural and coastal locations throughout south-east Australia. Although his design language is contemporary he has extensive experience and interest in restoration and adaption of heritage buildings of all periods.
Tom’s experience straddles the intricately connected yet often conflicted worlds of architect and builder. The close relationship he develops with his clients and the building professionals he works with allows him to successfully direct the whole architectural process, from conceptual discussion and through the complex steps of modern construction.
